Lower School Faculty Member Role Description
Job Summary:
The faculty member fulfills the mission of the school by planning, guiding, and evaluating the learning process of the students for whom the teacher is responsible within the framework of the school’s philosophy, organization, and curriculum. The faculty member provides the appropriate learning atmosphere and activities designed to maximize student competencies and skills for intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual growth toward a successful future. The faculty member has decision making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with school policies.
Reports to:
A faculty member is accountable to the Head of School and the respective Division Head(s).
She/He works with the administration, students and parents to animate the life and spirit of the school as reflected in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education.
Essential Duties:
- Understands and affirmatively supports the school’s philosophy by participating in the Christ-centered life of the school.
- Agrees to fully and willingly fulfill the terms of the contract of employment and Sacred Heart Commitment
- Collaborates with Department Chair and other members of the department to design and implement unit plans aligned to discipline standards
- Collaborates with the Division Head and Curriculum Coordinator to execute responsibilities relating to the academic program: curriculum development and implementation, classroom management, student evaluation, grade reporting and parent communication
- Uses varied assessment tools to perform both formative and summative assessments
- Maintains current and accurate records according to school policy
- Works with the Dean of Students to execute responsibilities relating to student-life programs, activities, student discipline and physical plant management.
- Works with the Division Head, the Guidance Counselor and the Head of the Boarding School to aid students in striving to achieve their maximum development and growth, both within and beyond the classroom
- Works with the Division Head and Dean of Students to secure substitutes in the event of illness or other emergencies.
- Communicates with parents regarding academic or behavioral concerns
- Attends the following: liturgical functions, faculty retreats, faculty meetings, department/curriculum meetings, in-service and in-house professional development meetings; school assemblies, parent assemblies and conferences and other school functions as required by the Head of School and/or Division Head
- Maintains professional currency as per guidelines set by the school, by yearly participation in a professional development program (which includes opportunities for attendance at conferences, workshops and advanced degree courses) and by regular reading of educational journals and discipline-related materials
Other Duties:
- Serve as a homeroom teacher
- Serve on school committees
- Duties - transportation, dining hall,recess,
- Chaperone - field studies, exchanges, dances
- Serve as Mentor for new faculty
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
- Maintain Safe Environment certification
- Valid Louisiana teaching certificate
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
